On April 30, the musical Malinche, created by acclaimed Spanish composer and producer Nacho Cano, celebrated a remarkable cultural moment with the inauguration of a special artistic exhibition by Mexican artist Karla de Lara. Invited to reinterpret the image of Malinche—one of the most complex and symbolic figures in Mexican history—De Lara presented a powerful new visual identity for the character as part of the immersive experience surrounding the production.
The exhibition opened at the iconic Frontón México and will remain on display in a semi-permanent format throughout the entire season of the musical in Mexico, becoming an integral part of the experience for audiences attending the show.
Known for her distinctive hyperrealistic pop art style, Karla de Lara approached the figure of Malinche through a contemporary lens, creating a reinterpretation that blends history, symbolism, and modern artistic language.
The exhibition features a central portrait of Malinche, accompanied by a series of alternative portraits that explore different emotional and symbolic dimensions of the character. Through these works, De Lara presents Malinche not only as a historical figure tied to the origins of mestizaje but also as a powerful and complex woman whose story continues to resonate today.
An Immersive Artistic Happening
Karla de Lara’s participation in Malinche goes beyond traditional exhibition formats. Her works form part of a visual happening integrated into the broader experience of the musical production.
Visitors arriving at Frontón México encounter the portraits as part of the journey surrounding the show, creating a dialogue between visual art and performing arts. This integration allows the audience to experience La Malinche not only through music and theater, but also through a powerful visual reinterpretation that expands the narrative universe of the production.
A Sculpture Bringing the Vision to Life
In addition to the paintings, the project also includes the development of a commemorative sculpture that will further bring Karla de Lara’s interpretation of Malinche to life. This sculptural work aims to translate her vision into a three-dimensional form, adding another layer to the artistic narrative and reinforcing the presence of this renewed icon within the experience of the musical.
Through this collaboration with Nacho Cano, Karla de Lara contributes a bold and contemporary artistic perspective to the story of Malinche. Her work invites audiences to revisit history with fresh eyes —transforming a figure often surrounded by controversy into a symbol of identity, resilience, and cultural dialogue.
With this exhibition, art becomes a living bridge between past and present, reaffirming the power of creativity to reinterpret history and inspire new generations.
